FINAL THOUGHTS | What I really love about The Path is the way Robinson builds suspense around her main character Tess. If you know anything about a thriller, you know something bad is going to happen, and when you learn there’s a woman who goes running alone on a path through the woods at odd hours, you know, it’s almost certain to be her.
But Robinson amps the stakes through her expositional foundation of Tess’s relationships. Most importantly are her wife and two children that are at risk. They’re the family she could lose, or that could lose her. Robinson allows Tess to be a kind and trusting person, easily capable of forming relationships, giving readers a sense that should anything happen to her or the one’s she loves, the impact on her sphere of influence will be large.
No spoilers, but there’s an early twist that I did not foresee, and it makes The Path wholly unique and a definite recommend to keep up with to the bitter end.
